Painted Glass

Painted Glass

Sometimes known as ‘lacquered’ or coloured glass, painted glass can make the perfect addition to any renovation project.

Toughened coloured glass is commonly used for kitchen splashbacks, bathroom splashbacks, table tops, and wall and furniture cladding.

With over 20 years of experience, Express Toughening is one of the UK’s top suppliers of bespoke painted glass.

Painted Toughened Glass

At Express Toughening, all of our toughened glass products are made to measure and available in a variety of finishes and thicknesses.

Our painted glass products are painted on the back side of the glass and sealed for longevity, producing a stunning depth of colour beneath the sleek surface of the glass. Polished edges finish off the look beautifully.

We always use the best quality low-iron toughened glass, with a choice of thickness between 4mm19mm. This allows you to use painted toughened glass for worktops, table tops, and splashbacks, which can offer a desirable finishing touch for your kitchen or bathroom.

They say the kitchen is the heart of the home, and to keep it bright and welcoming, you can easily add some extra light and colour with one of our toughened glass painted splashbacks.

Of course, back-painted glass can brighten up almost any room, not just kitchens – serving as both lively décor and providing a safe, low-maintenance alternative to more traditional materials.

Whatever or wherever you need it for, we can produce painted glass cut to size that will transform drab walls or furniture in a few simple steps. Why settle for practicality over visual appeal when you can have both with toughened painted glass from Express Toughening?

Bespoke Painted Glass

As with all of our bespoke glass products, we can cater for a wide selection of shapes and sizes when it comes to ordering painted glass panels.

Simply provide us with your desired shape, dimensions, and any extra specifications, and we’ll get to work manufacturing your made-to-order painted glass to meet your individual requirements.

Our in-house precision glass cutting machines allow us to accommodate any sockets, notches, and cut-outs for sinks and hobs, so you can achieve a precise fit and an elegant seamless look.

Not to forget the most important part of painted glass – the eye-catching colour painted on the back – we can also produce any shade you require.

Complementing or contrasting your interior design scheme has never been easier, because we can colour-match most standardised paint codes.

Provide us with a sample or a code number and we can supply painted glass with that colour – be it Dulux, Pantone, RAL, NCS, Valspar, Crown, or any other standardised paint colour system.

I’ve used Express Toughening twice now and have been very impressed with the glass they have supplied and also the helpfulness of the staff. The first job was a couple of years ago when they supplied me with a 6mm satin frosted toughened glass door for our shower room. From my measurements they supplied a fabulous door which had the hinge and lock holes cut out and also took into account the out of square measurement of the door frame. It fitted a treat and is stunning to look at.

More recently (late last year) they supplied me with painted toughened glass splash backs (7 items altogether in 6mm glass with the biggest being 2.1 metres long), all cut to my sizes and with numerous switch and socket cut-outs. My local glass supplier said they could not cut out the close together sockets and switches, but Express did and got it spot on!

As with the glass door, the splash backs were delivered to me by Expresses’ own transport and without any problems and quality issues.

After the scary bit of fitting them all the result is faultless and stunning. Thanks go to Alex who helped me with the ordering process and technical aspects of glass splash backs.

Online purchase

4mm toughened glass for greenhouse.

Although slightly dubious about ordering from a company I’ve never heard of and not local (300mile away) I’m so glad I took the plunge.

A great customer service from Helen and the team from start to finish, clearly there was nothing for me to worry about.

Their website is easy to use and made ordering online a doddle and for those shapes, they don’t have on their website a quick email and rough diagram sorted any issues there.

All glass arrived on time well packed and with no breakages.

It’s a company I wouldn’t hesitate to use again and I’d definitely recommend it to others who need quality glass cut to size.

Order placement was easy and everything arrived exactly on time and as promised. I won’t look anywhere else for my next order – great prices (way cheaper than other quotes) and great service!

Frequently Asked Questions

How is painted glass made?

While applying paint to one side of a sheet of glass may seem simple, achieving a high-quality and long-lasting result requires professional equipment and technical skills.

The first step in producing back-painted glass is to cut a piece of toughened glass to size, matching the customer’s specifications. The prepared glass will be cleaned and taped off to prevent irregularities in the paint.

Then, the custom paint colour can be applied evenly to one side of the glass, typically sprayed to achieve uniform layers. The painted glass can be cured in a special oven to harden it and ensure the paint adheres well.

To seal and protect the painted side, a protective coating will then be applied and heat-treated to bond the layers.

As it does not have the green-ish tint caused by iron deposits that can be seen in standard clear glass, low-iron glass is used for this process and product – allowing the paint colour to show through without distortion.

What are the benefits of back-painted glass?

There are many advantages to using painted toughened glass in decorative and functional applications – not least that it’s incredibly robust and looks great in any setting.

Whether it’s topping a table or counter, or covering a wall or cabinet, painted glass panels are very versatile. Often being more compact and affordable than other traditional materials, painted glass can upscale existing features without much work required to install them.

You can choose the shape and dimensions of custom painted glass, and of course, the colour – with colour-matching available for any standardised shade, from Dulux and Pantone to Farrow & Ball or Laura Ashley.

Additionally, back-painted glass allows you to add swathes of attractive colour to a space without increasing maintenance. The paint is protected under the glass, which is non-porous and easy to clean, so it won’t absorb stains or smells – especially if you opt for a polymer coating on the front.

Where can toughened painted glass be used?

The even opaque colour, combined with the smooth and reflective glass, makes back-painted glass perfect for covering up unsightly surfaces that may look worse for wear.

Painted glass splashbacks can be used in kitchens to protect the walls behind the sink or cooking area from splatters and stains, or in bathrooms by the sink or on the countertops to add modern elements that are easy to keep clean. Coloured glass can also give kitchen islands or home bars a quick makeover.

Similarly, painted glass can add character to most living spaces, from feature walls in lounges and bedrooms to dining room furniture. Table tops, sideboards, contemporary wainscoting – there are plenty of possibilities.

It can also help commercial premises to look the part, giving interiors a professional modern appearance – especially if you choose colours that reflect business branding. White painted glass can also be used to create a dry-erase board for meeting rooms!
