Product Description

Clear toughened glass is a strong multi-purpose glass. Ideal for glass shelves, shower screens, and balustrades. Available in thicknesses from 4mm up to 12mm.

Sometimes referred to as tempered glass, made by reinforcing float glass through a heating and cooling process, toughened glass becomes several times stronger – making it the go-to option for applications that require the use of safety glass.

Its increased resistance to heat, corrosion, and impacts allows toughened glass to withstand a range of conditions when installed both indoors and outdoors. If it does happen to break from a significant impact, it will shatter into granular blunt pieces rather than the sharp-edged shards you might expect from a large piece of glass.

The reduced risk of injury or damage, combined with the appealing simple aesthetics of clear toughened glass, make this material popular for many uses in residential, public, and commercial settings alike. What are the benefits of using toughened glass?

With so many reliable qualities, suitable for countless applications, the benefits of toughened glass are practically endless. The primary advantage, of course, is its superior strength and durability compared to standard non-toughened glass.

However, there are plenty of other advantages that come with clear toughened glass, too – including its aesthetic appeal. It provides strong and safe barriers wherever they’re needed while creating a sleek and impressive modern look.

They also let light flow through them and won’t obstruct views, making them much more uplifting as a design feature than alternative opaque materials – and their transparency and minimalist style makes them a good fit for any interior or exterior design.

Another key benefit that makes toughened glass such a convenient option is its extremely low-maintenance nature. You don’t really have to do anything to keep it in good condition – just wipe it clean with basic soapy water and a cloth if it gets dirty.

Can you cut toughened glass to a custom size?

While we can manufacture made-to-measure toughened glass to order in your desired dimensions, it’s important to make the distinction that the glass must be cut to size before it goes through the tempering process. It cannot be cut or amended once this has happened, as the new internal stresses will become imbalanced and the integrity of the weakened glass will be at risk.

This means that you must be very careful to check you have the right measurements and submit them correctly when placing your order, as the Express Toughening team cannot make any changes after the processing is underway. The same applies if you want specific cut-outs, drilled holes, or corner finishes, which must be completed first.

We are happy to help customers looking for toughened glass cut to bespoke measurements outside the standard range in our product builder, but it’s essential that you make sure to let us know exactly what you want us to do from the start, as this will also affect your quote. Where can toughened glass be installed?

As simple as they are in design, sheets of toughened glass are incredibly versatile, so you can use them in pretty much any setting and application that would benefit from glass that looks as beautiful as standard clear glass, but has been reinforced for safety.

For example, you could order custom toughened glass panels to use in a glass balustrade system for a staircase, balcony, mezzanine, or terrace – glass is an especially popular choice for a modern Juliet balcony these days.

Alternatively, pieces of toughened glass can be used to create bath screens or shower screens to keep splashes at bay in bathrooms, or in kitchens as splashbacks or worktop coverings to help walls and counters endure the daily rigours of the kitchen.

Another common use of this toughened material is for glass table tops, whether as part of the table itself or as a protective topper – and these can also be applied to all manner of desks and sideboards, chests of drawers and dressers, and other furniture.

I’ve used Express Toughening twice now and have been very impressed with the glass they have supplied and also the helpfulness of the staff. The first job was a couple of years ago when they supplied me with a 6mm satin frosted toughened glass door for our shower room. From my measurements they supplied a fabulous door which had the hinge and lock holes cut out and also took into account the out of square measurement of the door frame. It fitted a treat and is stunning to look at.

More recently (late last year) they supplied me with painted toughened glass splash backs (7 items altogether in 6mm glass with the biggest being 2.1 metres long), all cut to my sizes and with numerous switch and socket cut-outs. My local glass supplier said they could not cut out the close together sockets and switches, but Express did and got it spot on!

As with the glass door, the splash backs were delivered to me by Expresses’ own transport and without any problems and quality issues.

After the scary bit of fitting them all the result is faultless and stunning. Thanks go to Alex who helped me with the ordering process and technical aspects of glass splash backs.

4mm toughened glass for greenhouse. Although slightly dubious about ordering from a company I’ve never heard of and not local (300mile away) I’m so glad I took the plunge. A great customer service from Helen and the team from start to finish, clearly there was nothing for me to worry about.

Their website is easy to use and made ordering online a doddle and for those shapes, they don’t have on their website a quick email and rough diagram sorted any issues there. All glass arrived on time well packed and with no breakages.

It’s a company I wouldn’t hesitate to use again and I’d definitely recommend it to others who need quality glass cut to size.
