Compliance & Safety

Our bespoke shower screens are manufactured from BS EN 12150 toughened safety glass, ensuring they meet the strict safety requirements for glass used in buildings.

Toughened glass is up to five times stronger than standard glass and, in the rare event of breakage, fragments into small blunt pieces that significantly reduce the risk of injury.

All glass is processed and manufactured in line with British safety standards for architectural glass applications.

Glass shower screens – types and compatible fittings 

Here at Express Toughening, we supply bespoke, UK-made glass panels for a range of shower configurations. Each is manufactured to your dimensions, with the fittings you intend to use. 

Shower panels 

Fixed glass shower screens are ideal for walk-in showers and wet rooms, offering a clean, frameless appearance.

Recommended thickness guidance 

Thicker glass improves rigidity and reduces deflection on wider panels, keeping areas around the shower dry from splashes and spills. 

For this reason, we recommend: 

  • Up to 1000mm wide – 8mm
  • 1000–1400mm – 10mm
  • Larger or unsupported spans – 12mm or above

Compatible accessories 

To deliver the uninterrupted aesthetic, a range of compatible accessories will be needed, including:

Glass shower doors

Manufactured using bespoke toughened glass, these bespoke glass shower doors are suitable for recessed enclosures, inline panels, and corner installations. 

Recommended thickness guidance 

For most doors, 8mm or 10mm thicknesses will be sufficient. However, for larger or heavier designs, 10mm or 12mm is considered a better choice.

Hinged shower screens

These screens are generally manufactured using 8mm or 10mm toughened glass, depending on the sizing required.

Shower screen fittings and glass preparation 

All bespoke glass shower screens from Express Toughening are supplied with:

As all machining is completed prior to the toughening process, it is essential that you carefully select and double-check every aspect of your order prior to submitting it. Toughened glass panels cannot be cut or altered after.

Are toughened glass shower screens safe? 

All of our bespoke glass shower screens are safe because they are manufactured from thermally toughened safety glass. 

If the glass screens were to break, though unlikely, the toughening process means the glass will shatter into small, blunt fragments instead of sharp shards. 

 

Does Express Toughening install shower screens? 

No, Express Toughening Ltd is a manufacturer and supplier of bespoke glass shower screens. For this reason, we don’t offer in-house installation. 

Most customers arrange fitting through their preferred bathroom installer or contractor. 

 

What shapes of bespoke glass shower screens are available?

How big are glass shower screens?

When you order a toughened glass shower screen from Express Toughening, you’ll be able to provide the precise measurements you require, and we’ll produce it in your chosen size. Depending on the shape, we can manufacture glass shower panels to a maximum height of 2m and maximum width of 3m. The larger the panel, the thicker the glass should be for strength and safety.

We provide tempered glass shower screens in several thicknesses ranging from 8mm to 15mm thick, with polished edges. The specific thicknesses available also depend on the finish you choose (for example, frosted satin glass and tinted glass are only available in 10mm).

There’s no standard size for glass shower screens – you need to measure your bathroom carefully to ensure that it fits your desired space. The design of the shower also matters, as you can only take glass shower screen measurements after any tiles and trays have already been fitted. You’ll need to take into account the height of the shower head and whether the screen will pivot or there will be a hinged door, as there must be enough space for it to open without obstructions.

Where can you install glass shower screens?

One of the best things about our toughened glass shower panels is that you can implement them in a range of bathroom styles. Whether you have a wet room, a walk-in shower, a shower-bath combo, or classic corner enclosure, we can provide glass shower panels to fit seamlessly into your design. Of course, the installation process is slightly different for each type.

Your selection and installation will be influenced by not only the dimensions, but also the overall layout of your bathroom, the type of frame or fixings, access requirements, and whether screens and doors are fixed or hinged. Be sure to keep in mind, shower enclosure doors can be pivoting, sliding, or folding, so consider the types of attachment and movement carefully.

There are many ways to add a glass shower panel to your bathroom, from glass bath screens in place of a hanging curtain to fitting a glass door for a shower in a recessed alcove. For the ultimate modern look in a wet room style bathroom, why not choose a ‘floating’ glass shower screen with openings on both sides for entry from the left or right?

How much does a custom glass shower screen cost?

The cost of a bespoke glass shower screen is determined by a range of factors, including the type of glass and the size of the panel. For example, standard clear glass will typically cost less than specially treated frosted or tinted glass, and larger panels of glass will cost more than smaller ones.

Thicker toughened glass will also have a higher price than thinner toughened glass because it is stronger and heavier (which can also affect delivery costs). This is an investment in a more durable and longer-lasting product.

Similarly, a simple shape like a rectangle will have a lower cost than a rake or cut-off corner shape. The more complicated the shape is – e.g. with specific requests for cut-outs, notches, or holes, or with particular corner finishes – the more it will cost to manufacture.

If you opt for a stain-repellent polymer coating to make the glass easier to clean, this can be added for an extra fee.

Are glass shower screens easy to install?

As long as you have measured your shower area correctly and provided accurate measurements for your glass screen, it should fit right into place. You should also have selected an appropriate installation method prior to placing your order, and taken this into account when designing your shower screen.

We provide various glass fittings here at Express Toughening, which you can order alongside your glass panel. This includes a variety of glass seals (glass to floor, glass to wall, glass to glass, glass compression, or magnetic) and a selection of glazing channels in polished or brushed aluminium or stainless steel.

If you want to install a hinged glass shower screen that can be opened and closed, we also stock adjustable, 90 degree, or free pivot hinges in chrome or brass. Be sure to request adjustments for hinges when ordering your glass shower screen, and check the hinge product information for design compatibility.

Are glass shower screens safe?

When measured and fitted correctly, our glass shower screens are completely safe. They are manufactured from toughened glass, which is made stronger than standard glass through a tempering process that changes its structure.

This means the glass is much more resistant to breakage, but even if it does break under a heavy impact, it will fracture into smoother granular pieces instead of jagged pieces with sharp edges, which poses a much lower risk of injury.

It’s especially important to use strong toughened glass in the bathroom because of the possibility of slips and falls on wet surfaces – and the shower screen itself helps to reduce this risk by preventing water from splashing outside of the shower zone onto the floor.

I’ve used Express Toughening twice now and have been very impressed with the glass they have supplied and also the helpfulness of the staff. The first job was a couple of years ago when they supplied me with a 6mm satin frosted toughened glass door for our shower room. From my measurements they supplied a fabulous door which had the hinge and lock holes cut out and also took into account the out of square measurement of the door frame. It fitted a treat and is stunning to look at.

More recently (late last year) they supplied me with painted toughened glass splash backs (7 items altogether in 6mm glass with the biggest being 2.1 metres long), all cut to my sizes and with numerous switch and socket cut-outs. My local glass supplier said they could not cut out the close together sockets and switches, but Express did and got it spot on!

As with the glass door, the splash backs were delivered to me by Expresses’ own transport and without any problems and quality issues.

After the scary bit of fitting them all the result is faultless and stunning. Thanks go to Alex who helped me with the ordering process and technical aspects of glass splash backs.

4mm toughened glass for greenhouse. Although slightly dubious about ordering from a company I’ve never heard of and not local (300mile away) I’m so glad I took the plunge. A great customer service from Helen and the team from start to finish, clearly there was nothing for me to worry about.

Their website is easy to use and made ordering online a doddle and for those shapes, they don’t have on their website a quick email and rough diagram sorted any issues there. All glass arrived on time well packed and with no breakages.

It’s a company I wouldn’t hesitate to use again and I’d definitely recommend it to others who need quality glass cut to size.
