Are glass kitchen splashbacks heat resistant?

In line with British Standards (BS EN 12150), our toughened glass splashbacks are heat resistant to 250°C. While non-tempered glass or acrylic kitchen splashbacks are likely to crack or even melt from repetitive exposure to high temperatures, heat-resistant tempered glass kitchen splashbacks will hold up against the heat of busy cooking areas.

The 6mm thick toughened glass is also strong enough to resist knocks and scratches, and easy to wipe clean of food and drink splashes so they don’t form stains. Not only are they an attractive additional element of décor for any modern kitchen, but they’re also extremely practical, making them a cost-effective investment for a simple kitchen makeover.

However, you should bear in mind that heat resistant does not mean fireproof – these glass kitchen splashbacks are not made using fire-rated glass. Equally, the finish can affect the level of heat resistance, which is why products like mirror glass aren’t suitable for use near an oven or hob unless toughened. Toughened low iron glass is often the best choice for glass kitchen splashbacks.

Can I install a glass kitchen splashback behind a gas hob?

The toughened glass kitchen splashbacks we manufacture at Express Toughening are safe to install behind a hob area due to their enhanced heat resistance. The tempered glass can withstand heat, steam, and hot liquids up to 250°C – but it’s best not to install the glass too close to the hob.

Especially for gas hobs, which have an open flame, the 6mm glass splashback on the wall should be around 100mm from the edge of the hob/stovetop. It should never be in direct contact with a heat source – so your pots and pans shouldn’t be touching the splashback while you’re cooking.

Splatters of hot food and condensation from steam are inevitable, but you should try to wipe it away as soon as possible rather than letting it build up. Highly pigmented foods and liquids can stain, so this is important for preserving the kitchen splashback’s appearance as well as its integrity.

Can I order a custom glass kitchen splashback design?

Of course you can! By using our online order tool below, you can select the glass finish, dimensions, shape, and extra features that you want for your bespoke glass kitchen splashback. We offer several set shapes for glass splashbacks, such as double rakes and reverse Ts, because more complex shapes can be impractical and compromise the overall integrity of the piece.

However, you can request extra measures to customise your kitchen splashback even further. You can add dubbed corners or radius corners, drilled holes or notches, and internal cut-outs if you need to accommodate fittings like electrical sockets and cooker hoods. One of the most creative ways to customise a glass kitchen splashback is to choose your own image to be digitally printed behind the glass. We offer six set designs for printed glass splashbacks, which include stunning marble-effect, imitation brick, and nature prints. How much do custom glass splashbacks cost?

Compared to other durable kitchen splashback materials, such as tile or stone, glass is far more affordable – allowing you to give your kitchen a quick makeover, no matter your budget.

While toughened glass splashbacks are, in turn, more expensive than some other materials – such as acrylic or vinyl – these cheaper alternatives do not have the longevity of a robust material like glass, and are not heat-resistant.

When you factor in the long-term costs of maintenance and replacements, glass kitchen splashbacks typically come out on top, offering better value over time.

Not only do glass splashbacks look more attractive than acrylic or vinyl, but they can also be installed easily with very little wall preparation, minimising installation costs with a few simple DIY steps.

Of course, the overall cost of your glass splashback will depend on the specifications you choose and the level of customisation required. Different types of glass cost more than standard transparent glass, and extras like pre-drilled holes and cut-outs will add to the final price.

Should splashbacks be made of toughened glass?

If you want to order a glass splashback primarily for decorative purposes – such as a stylish backdrop to your kitchen counter or a unique reflective surface behind your bathroom sink area – then it does not necessarily need to be made from toughened glass.

All of our 6mm kitchen splashbacks are made from toughened glass except the mirrored option, so you can rest assured that the product is made from heat-resistant safety glass in most cases.

If you intend to install the glass in proximity to a heat source, such as behind a cooker, then it does need to be toughened to ensure it can withstand higher temperatures.

It’s also not advisable to install non-toughened glass in a frequently used area where it’s likely to be bumped or scratched, as it may be more likely to break.

However, if you simply want to use a mirrored glass splashback for the brightening aesthetic and mirror functionality, you should be able to find a safe position to install it away from heat sources and potential impacts.

I’ve used Express Toughening twice now and have been very impressed with the glass they have supplied and also the helpfulness of the staff. The first job was a couple of years ago when they supplied me with a 6mm satin frosted toughened glass door for our shower room. From my measurements they supplied a fabulous door which had the hinge and lock holes cut out and also took into account the out of square measurement of the door frame. It fitted a treat and is stunning to look at.

More recently (late last year) they supplied me with painted toughened glass splash backs (7 items altogether in 6mm glass with the biggest being 2.1 metres long), all cut to my sizes and with numerous switch and socket cut-outs. My local glass supplier said they could not cut out the close together sockets and switches, but Express did and got it spot on!

As with the glass door, the splash backs were delivered to me by Expresses’ own transport and without any problems and quality issues.

After the scary bit of fitting them all the result is faultless and stunning. Thanks go to Alex who helped me with the ordering process and technical aspects of glass splash backs.

4mm toughened glass for greenhouse. Although slightly dubious about ordering from a company I’ve never heard of and not local (300mile away) I’m so glad I took the plunge. A great customer service from Helen and the team from start to finish, clearly there was nothing for me to worry about.

Their website is easy to use and made ordering online a doddle and for those shapes, they don’t have on their website a quick email and rough diagram sorted any issues there. All glass arrived on time well packed and with no breakages.

It’s a company I wouldn’t hesitate to use again and I’d definitely recommend it to others who need quality glass cut to size.
