Are glass kitchen splashbacks heat resistant?

In line with British Standards (BS EN 12150), our toughened glass splashbacks are heat resistant to 250°C. Compared to non-tempered glass or acrylic kitchen splashbacks, which are likely to crack or even melt from repetitive exposure to high temperatures, heat-resistant tempered glass kitchen splashbacks will hold up against the heat of busy cooking areas.

They are also strong enough to resist knocks and scratches, and easy to wipe clean of food and drink splashes so they don’t form stains. 

However, heat-resistant does not mean fireproof – these glass kitchen splashbacks are not made using fire-rated glass. Equally, the finish can affect the level of heat resistance, which is why products like mirror glass aren’t suitable for use near an oven or hob unless toughened. Toughened low iron glass, instead, is often the best choice for glass kitchen splashbacks.

Can I install a glass kitchen splashback behind a gas hob?

Yes, our toughened glass kitchen splashbacks are safe to install behind a hob area due to their enhanced heat resistance. The tempered glass can withstand heat, steam, and hot liquids up to 250°C. 

Just remember, for gas hobs, which have an open flame, you should fit your glass splashback on the wall, it should be around 100mm from the edge of the hob/stovetop and should never be in direct contact with a heat source. This means your pots and pans also shouldn’t be touching the splashback while you’re cooking.

How much do custom glass splashbacks cost?

The overall cost of your glass splashback will depend on the specifications you choose and the level of customisation required. Different types of glass and extras like pre-drilled holes and cut-outs will cost more than standard transparent glass and will add to the final price.

Compared to other durable kitchen splashback materials, however, such as tile or stone, glass is far more affordable – allowing you to give your kitchen a quick makeover, no matter your budget.

Are sink kitchen splashbacks a good option?

Splashbacks are also regularly used behind sinks, showers, and baths, instead of tiles, because they are hygienic, non-porous, resist water damage, and are easy to clean.

How to measure for your toughened glass splashback

If you aren’t comfortable measuring with a tape measure, you can use a template made from cardboard, Corex, or MDF, cut to the exact size and shape of your wall area. 

When cutting the template, make sure any cut-outs for sockets are positioned relative to the back plate and always leave a margin of +/- 1mm, which is the industry standard.

I’ve used Express Toughening twice now and have been very impressed with the glass they have supplied and also the helpfulness of the staff. The first job was a couple of years ago when they supplied me with a 6mm satin frosted toughened glass door for our shower room. From my measurements they supplied a fabulous door which had the hinge and lock holes cut out and also took into account the out of square measurement of the door frame. It fitted a treat and is stunning to look at.

More recently (late last year) they supplied me with painted toughened glass splash backs (7 items altogether in 6mm glass with the biggest being 2.1 metres long), all cut to my sizes and with numerous switch and socket cut-outs. My local glass supplier said they could not cut out the close together sockets and switches, but Express did and got it spot on!

As with the glass door, the splash backs were delivered to me by Expresses’ own transport and without any problems and quality issues.

After the scary bit of fitting them all the result is faultless and stunning. Thanks go to Alex who helped me with the ordering process and technical aspects of glass splash backs.

4mm toughened glass for greenhouse. Although slightly dubious about ordering from a company I’ve never heard of and not local (300mile away) I’m so glad I took the plunge. A great customer service from Helen and the team from start to finish, clearly there was nothing for me to worry about.

Their website is easy to use and made ordering online a doddle and for those shapes, they don’t have on their website a quick email and rough diagram sorted any issues there. All glass arrived on time well packed and with no breakages.

It’s a company I wouldn’t hesitate to use again and I’d definitely recommend it to others who need quality glass cut to size.
